The head of the Catholic Church in Cuba, Cardinal Jaime Ortega, says it is in one of its worst crises in recent times and people are openly criticising the socialist system, reports the BBC.

Cardinal Jaime Ortega told Palabra Nueva (a newsletter of the Archdiocese of Havana) that there was a national consensus that the government make the necessary changes “quickly”.

In the Cardinal’s words:

“But there is a fundamental common denominator in almost all discussants: there needs to be necessary changes promptly in Cuba to rectify the situation. I believe that this opinion reaches a kind of national consensus and its postponement produces impatience and uneasiness among the people.”
