DISTRITO 25: Joe Garcia por la política de la comunidad (El Jackson Hospital)

Enviado por ei en Abril 27, 2010 – 7:10 am.I know from first-hand experience just how important Jackson Memorial Hospital is to our community. My daughter, Gaby, was born there and my wife, Aileen, and I have been treated at Jackson many times. It’s the hospital of choice for thousands of families in South Florida when their kids get sick or have a life-threatening condition. Jackson is also where the next generations of doctors and nurses get trained. In short, Jackson Memorial Hospital saves countless lives and is invaluable to South Florida.

Unfortunately, after years of neglect and mismanagement, Jackson has serious financial problems and is on the brink of closing. Nurses are being laid off and patients are being turned away. This is unacceptable and puts our community’s access to affordable quality health care in danger.

Please join me in signing a petition urging the Florida legislature to save Jackson Memorial Hospital.
I don’t believe that throwing money at a problem makes it go away. In fact, Jackson must make meaningful reforms to correct many of the problems that put it in this precarious position. But the truth is that while some of Jackson’s problems are self-inflicted, the root of this problem lies in politicians with the wrong priorities.

Many of the same Tallahassee politicians that were supposed to look after Jackson and ensure it was being properly funded took their eye off the ball or simply had the wrong priorities. These are the same wrong priorities that resulted in the under-funding of our schools and a tax increase on middle-class families in the middle of a recession. It’s what lead to the worst budgetary disaster in the history of our state.

My view on this is simple. If politicians can find tax-payer funds to build luxury baseball stadiums, they ought to be able to fund our schools and hospitals.

Some say this is a local issue a candidate for US Congress shouldn’t worry about. I disagree. The devastating effects of Jackson Memorial Hospital closing down or laying off more workers would worsen the quality of life of each and every single person in our community. I refuse to be a spectator while my daughter and her generation inherits a community that is not as strong as the one her parents found. People who work for a living should be able to take their kids to a doctor when they get sick. In the end, this isn’t a local, state or federal issue — it’s just the right thing to do.

Will you stand and fight with me for Jackson? Please sign the petition on my website.
