Entry from: Pinar del Rio, Cuba
Entry Title: "Pinar by Day"
Entry:
"I slept realy well, even though I was completely excited to be out there. Cuba is so mindblowing, you have to question everything and try to understand the how and then the why, and most of the time you don't get an answer... but, slowly, little by little, things are getting in, and this difficulty to understand things and behaviours makes my curiosity go wild, I want to see and hear and be there everywhere.
During breakfast I dropped the small pot of jam on the floor. Can't tell you how bloody bad I was feeling, as I thought that the people serving me might have difficulties putting the same thing in their plate.
After freeing the room, I went out to visit the town. As a department capital, the town was quite big and not easy to cover by foot. I had been given a contact at the university by Gertrudis, the Argentine psychologist in La Paz... but it was a sunday, so I did not even bother going to the university that time.
I wandered in town, some old colonial buildings were in a bad state, most buildings were from a the beggining of the century and ok, with no charm in their architecture. But the Cuban specialty was there of course: bright colors painted over and over, making for incredible walls and doors.
I observed a bit of the sunday life, took a few pictures as I was walking, did not really meet anybody to talk to.
I decided I should move on, and took the time to sort out transportation: checking out the buses. Not interesting. Then the official taxis; too expensive. Then the unnoficial taxis... better, but in fact they were... official taxis! I waited for other tourists to show up, but I had been in all the "hot spots" the night before and had not seen any. And no Cubans around wishing to go to Vinales either. Eventually I took one of these taxis, and a lady drove me to Vinales."
