"We need to use the tools at our disposal within the framework of the Agreement to request a suspension of the Agreement. This will send a firm and clear message. The EU will not tolerate the violation of human rights,” announced Dita Charanzová, Vice-president of the European Parliament, from Brussels. “Human rights violations are a clear red line in the Political Dialogue and Cooperation Agreement between the EU and Cuba,” she concluded. Valentina Martínez, International Secretary of the Popular Party of Spain, stressed that "it is incomprehensible that Spanish political groups that have used precisely the democratic tools to get to the government, deny that same tool to our brothers in Cuba today." In the same panel, Edipcia Dubón, a former representative of the Sandinista Renovation Movement, exposed the danger of Cuban interference in Nicaragua and the rest of the region.“The Cuban people’s problem is not about the right versus the left. The Cuban people’s problem has to do with human rights and democracy,” highlighted Rosa María Payá, paraphrasing the words of her father, the Cuban opposition leader assassinated by the dictatorship in 2012. “Freedom does not belong to one party or the other, freedom belongs to everyone,” said Cuban-American writer Vanessa García on a panel in which Cuban-Americans committed to both political parties in the United States participated. During the panel, the political scientist, Félix Toledo, highlighted the importance that "the Cuban people should not feel excluded while the pressure on the dictatorship increases."The importance of the governments of the hemisphere not making unilateral concessions to the dictatorship was a recurring idea in the panels. Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart stated that "the policy of the United States should be to help the cause of freedom for the Cuban people and not to the regime that represses them." The Former President of Costa Rica, Laura Chinchilla, also ratified her support for the Cuba Decide movement. The call to action that closed the conference was the launch of the second stage of Pasos de Cambio, so that Cubans on the island and in exile may share their proposals with the people and the international community in favor of a change in the system in Cuba. About CUBA DECIDE
Cuba Decide is a citizen initiative to change the political and economic system towards democracy and the rule of law.
THE STRATEGY
Generate the necessary pressure to force the regime to submit to the will of the people through the joint non-violent action of citizens and the international community.
THE TOOL
Cubans must decide their future and be free.
Cuba Decide proposes that the will of the Cubans be expressed and complied with through a binding plebiscite - a direct vote of the people - in Cuba to make a concrete change in the system, by answering the following question:
Do you agree that free, fair and plural elections should be called by exercising freedom of expression and the press, and freely organizing into political parties and social organizations with total plurality? Yes or no?
